Portrait

Last class we created a 2 inch grid on our papers and portraits and took pictures.

  • Draw the outline around the edge of your face and head, including your hair, clothes, and ears.
MOUTH
Add a 1 inch grid in the area of the mouth on the drawing paper and a 1/2 inch grid on your picture. Grid even smaller for best results.

Add mouth lines including upper and lower lip lines. Draw the teeth very lightly if you can see them. Pay attention to where the lip lines cross the grid lines

NOSE
Add a 1 inch grid in the area of the mouth on the drawing paper and a 1/2 inch grid on your picture. Grid even smaller for best results.

Draw the nose lobes and nostrils. DO NOT outline the upper part of the nose. You will shade this later.

2. In which drawing did you use the least amount of LINE?

3. Which drawing used the most amount of VALUE?

4. What would you improve upon next time? What will you do differently?

Describe how you used different tones, effects, techniques and why.
Describe the difficulties you had and how you tried to overcome them.

Drawing using the grid
Why might an artist choose to use a grid?  In what ways is it helpful?
In what part of your drawing is your lightest value used?  Where are the two middle values used?  Where does your darkest value appear in your drawing?

Overall questions
What is your favorite part of this art project? Observational or Grid?
If you were to do these drawings again, what would you do differently?
What did you find most difficult about these drawings?

What letter grade do you believe you deserve for this project?

Picasso

Pablo Picasso was one of the most well known and influential artists of the 20th century. He was a painter, sculptor, print-maker, and ceramicist.

Picasso at Work Video

Picasso developed a style known as Cubism. Cubism is an abstract art form that was influenced by Egyptian, African and Native American art. Cubist art is very flat and angular, and shows multiple views of an object, such as the front and side, in the same composition.

Picasso started as a traditional painter, but his style changed over the years.

Finding Angles in a Drawing

When you are drawing object you also need to find correct angles.

Use the following technique to sight the angles with pencils.

Tilt your pencil to align with a feature in your image.

Then compare it to the horizontal border of your paper.

The angle should be as close to the actual angle as possible.

It might help to imagine the angles as hands on a clock. What time would the angle above be?

a clock's hands used as drawing checkpoints

Continue the process until you find all the angles...

Drawing in Proportion - Find the Unit of Measure

Today we will begin to learn the skills we need make a realistic drawing.

First we need to make a drawing that is in Proportion, meaning that the top and sides are in the correct ratio to each other.

Use your pencil and thumb to measure a distance on the object. This is called the Unit of Measure.

Then use the unit of Measure to find out how tall the tube is. Drop your pencil and thumb down the length of the tube and count how many widths you find.

1 width

2 widths

..and the tube is almost 3 widths tall.

Here is a link that goes into much more detail about this process.

Upload your 6 drawings and answer the questions
